1928-1987. US Pop artist and filmmaker. He
made his name in 1962 with paintings of
Campbell's soup cans, Coca-Cola bottles, and
film stars. In his New York studio, the
Factory, he produced series of garish
silk-screen prints. His films include the
semi-documentary Chelsea Girls 1966 and Trash
1970. Warhol was born in Pittsburgh, where he
studied art. In the 1950s he became a leading
commercial artist in New York. With the
breakthrough of Pop art, his bizarre
personality and flair for self-publicity made
him a household name. He was a pioneer of
multimedia events with the Exploding Plastic
Inevitable touring show in 1966 featuring the
Velvet Underground (see Lou Reed). In 1968 he
was shot and nearly killed by a radical
feminist, Valerie Solanas. In the 1970s and
1980s Warhol was primarily a society
portraitist, although his activities included
a magazine (Interview) and a cable TV show.
His early silk-screen series dealt with car
crashes and suicides, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis
Presley, and flowers. His films, beginning
with Sleep 1963 and ending with Bad 1977,
have a strong documentary or improvisational
element. His books include The Philosophy of
Andy Warhol (From A to B and Back Again) 1975
and Popism 1980.
